Having trouble?
Here you will find some helpful tips of the terms used when placing your quote.

  • Envelope Purpose
    • This information will help us to confirm that the envelope you have selected is suitable for the purpose you have in mind.
  • Paper type & weight
    • Select the paper type you require by weight and colour to suit your specific company style or product quality or to match your budget and print quality.
  • Paper GSM
    • GSM is a measurement of paper weight mass per unit area, normally expressed as grams per square metre. The higher the GSM number the heavier the paper grade.
  • Seal
    • Select the seal, or closure type, based on the envelope application. Most mail houses will require a ‘moist seal’ envelope. Other options are presseal and peel-n-seal.  Ungummed envelopes are also an option as are resealable envelopes as commonly used for interoffice correspondence.
  • Envelope Type
    • Wallet envelopes (also known as correspondence) are identified by the closure along the longer edge of the envelope. Pocket envelopes have the closure along the short edge. Booklet mailers are ideal for larger contents such as brochures and catalogues. Bankers are ideal for mail insertion machines for bulk runs.
  • Window Type
    • Select whether you require a window on the face (front) of the envelope or the reverse.
  • Window Size
  • Window Position
    • You can specify the distance of your window position from the bottom of the envelope as well as the distance from the left. Please click here to download (pdf) specifications of other window sizes and positions.
  • Print Coverage
    • Specify how much of the outside of the envelope will be printed with images, logos copy etc.
  • Number of Colours
    • You have the option of printing up to a total of 5 colours plus varnish on your envelope.
  • Varnish
    • Select this option if you will require either a spot varnish or an all over varnish for your printed envelope.
  • Secretive
    • A secretive pattern is also referred to as security pattern. This is commonly printed on the inside of an envelope to ensure that the contents can not be read. Select either a standard pattern (Tudor® diamond) or specify a custom pattern.
  • Printing Method
    • We will recommend a suitable printing method for your printed envelope based on the number of colours and paper selection. However, if you have a preference please specify.
  • Flexo
    • Flexo printing is suitable for a wide range of printing requirements. From a standard level of print quality for economical large volumes, to fine detail and multiple colours for high quality jobs including up to 4 colour process. Once printed, the envelope is cut, folded, glued and gummed in one continuous process.
  • Flat Sheet
    • Flat sheet printing allows for greater detail print quality. This process sees the sheet of paper first printed then form cut (die cut) and then manufactured into a specific envelope shape.
  • Overprint
    • Offset printing is applicable to pre-manufactured (stock lines) envelopes. Suitable for quality printing of up to four colours overprinting allows for fine detail reproduction but requires a 7mm bleed from the top of the envelope. Generally a lower cost per thousand because of specialized Jet presses and envelope feeders.
  • Quick Open
    • Facilitates easy opening of an envelope via plastic strip device. This is a value-add function for receivers of your mailed item. Reduces instances of paper cuts and tearing of envelope contents.
  • FTP
    • File Transfer Protocol. A system to retrieve documents, files and programs from computers on the Internet which provide public access.
  • Bleed
    • In printing, an image that extends off the edge of the page or envelope. Envelopes with bleed generally must be printed before they are folded, since the fold line runs through the printed image.
  • Custom Make
    • Also known as an Advelope™. Any envelope that is not a stock line product  but instead a specific, fit for purpose shape and size with unique window positions etc.
  • Die Cutting
    • The process by which a steel die is used to cut paper into a variety of shapes and sizes.
  • Inside Side Seam
    • Seam construction on an envelope where the seam glues beneath the back panel.
  • Kraft
    • Paper used for the manufacture of envelopes which are strong and opaque. This paper is generally used in larger envelopes because of its strength and is a deep yellow in colour – often called Gold Kraft.
  • Moist Seal
    • Needs moisture to seal envelope. Sometimes also referred to as Lick'n Stick
  • Outside Seams
    • A side seam which is glued to the outside back of the envelope rather than the inside.
  • Press Seal®
    • Tudor® envelopes’ sealing method utilizing a patch of latex gum on the flap and on the back of the envelope which adhere to one another on contact. Also referred to as Self Seal.
